Gout vs Diet
The cause of gout is a high blood level of uric acids which is a waste product. The waste product is a breakdown of purines which are substances naturally found in your body. Purines are also found in several types of food.
The treatment of gout, in times past, included very strict dietary regiments but because of medications that are used to combat gout the regiments are not as harsh as they once were.
There still are some recommended dietary modifications though as they can greatly help your chances of avoiding gout flare-ups. Many medications for gout cause many, potentially serious, side effects so dietary modifications can be a better option than the medications.
Some of the foods that are high in purines and should be avoided are liver, brain, kidney, sweetbread, anchovies, peas, beans, mackerel, mincemeat, scallops, muscles, and herring. Other foods such as poultry, meat, and fish have lesser amounts of purines so it is suggested that they be eaten in moderation.

Other ways that you can lower the risk of gout naturally are:
1. Avoiding alcohol altogether or only drinking it in moderation, perhaps saving yourself for special occasions only. Drinking a lot of alcohol increases the risk of hyperuricemia, as the alcohol gets in the way of the natural removal of uric acids from the body. If you have gout and especially if you are having a gout attack alcohol should be avoided completely.
2. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids to flush the system of uric acids. Aim for around 2 liters of water a day, more if you are exercising or have a physical job.
3. Try to maintain a healthy weight. The more excess weight you are holding the more stress is then put on your joints increasing the possibility of gout.
4. Try to lose excess weight but do not do so by rapid weight loss diets as they can increase uric acid levels in the blood. In weight loss also avoid low-carb diets as they are high in fat and protein. Consuming too much of these types of foods can increase your chances of developing hyperuricemia.
Foods that are low in purines will help in keeping gout at bay. Below is a list of foods which are low in purines.
1. Breakfast – Cereals and breads, coffee, tea, oatmeal, eggs, fruits, juices, cheese (low fat), milk, and peanut butter.
2. Lunch – Nuts and peanut butter, pasta macaroni, soups, cream style soups, cheeses (low fat) and broths
3. Dinner – Pasta, macaroni, eggs, vegetables, breads and cereals, low-fat cheeses and soups.
Other foods and food items low in purines are gelatin, fats and oils (in small amounts), soda, sugar, syrups, and other sweets in moderation.
As with anything, moderation is the key to a low purine diet. Some foods which have a moderate purine level are: beef, lamb, pork, vegetables such as mushrooms, asparagus, cauliflower, spinach, wheat germ, all types of yeast and gravies.
It is ok to have these foods as long is it is in moderation. Even foods that are high in purines can be eaten occasionally unless you have gout or are having an attack of gout.

I have had two C-Sections in the past two years and have already had to have gallbladder surgery because the doctor said a woman’s organ function slows a little afterward.
Now I believe I might have a little gout in my foot. I’m not certain yet and won’t know for sure until my test results come in.
But, in the meantime, does anyone know for sure if women are at a greater risk of getting gout if they’ve had a C-Section?
I’m not sure about a C-Section, but a few people have told me that gout started soon after gall bladder removal.
In fact any surgery can trigger gout attacks if dehydration, anesthetics, or other medications lead to a rise in uric acid.
I was just diagnosed with acute gout (1/08) and had carpal tunnel surgery (12/07)
After reading about the possible side affects and risks of taking indocin, I wouldn’t take it by itself, let alone with anything else. But if you must, there should be no interactions other than they both cause constipation, so you may have a problem on the porcelain throne. It’s always best to ask a pharmacist or Dr. to be sure, and most cities offer a free help line at their local hospitals, so I would definately ask a professional.
I believe I have been misdiagnosed with gout in my big toe after doing research. However, the toe still hurts, but it’s not red or swollen. Even hurts when I move it up/down; mildy squeeze; wear shoes with 11/2" heals or walk a lot. Took 3 different meds for gout which hurt stomach, but toe never felt any better. My uric acid level that day was 10.9 which is why Dr gave me those meds. This has been a problem for over two years, so to me that’s one more reason it can’t be gout. before I go back to Dr, I would like some other help, please!
If your uric acid is 10.9, and your toe hurts, it’s gout.
My daughter is 25 yrs. old. She just started a new job and is standing in water all day. (greenhouse) her foot keeps swelling up and causing her a lot of pain. she has gone to the dr. and had x-rays that have shown nothing. Dr says gout. Does anyone know what causes that and what she could do to relieve the pain? This has been going on for over 3 weeks
25 is pretty young to have gout, but gout is generally caused by diet. To much protein, to much soda (soft drinks) and any other foods with high purines content. If Doctor didn’t give any Rx, then try eating / drinking cherries.
My husband has recently developed gout and does not have insurance. So..he has changed his diet and is trying to make the appropriate changes. But he is still in a LOT of pain. Does anyone know any natural remedies he can try? Thank you!
I had dozens of gout attacks and they are so frickin painful that I had to get drug for them, the only one I take but not on a regular basis. I wind up taking way, way less than a few pills a month by taking one or two at the start of an attack.
The attacks come fairly infrequently between them..
I refused the allopurinol and rarely take the anti-inflammatories as they caused my mom’s kidneys to be destroyed and she wound up on dialysis but the pain is so great sometimes I had to..it feels like someone repeatedly hit my foot with a hammer or cut it up with razors or something.
I have found that by taking one or at most two pills if it does not leave of Colchicine that so far it goes away in a day or so. The prescription has 30 pills so it lasts a long time as one has breaks between attacks and if one or two can improve or fix it, it could last quite a while..mine have unlike the pills they want you to take daily
Interestingly, it is made from a plant the seeds of the autumn crocus or meadow saffron which was first used for gout in 1810 but I do not know how they altered it.

luckily it has been several months since I had an attacks as I started eating better I guess.
I would recommend he make a single trip to a doctor who will write several refills and have it on hand just in case of severe pain as a fellow suffer
Now As far as natural things, he might try the hallelujah diet which is mostly mostly raw vegan diet that has helped others and will help many health problems

Dr walker in his book on vegetable and fruit juices recommend the following fresh juice formulas for gout in addition to sour cherry juice and cherries of all types which is the standard advice on gout
1 carrot – 10 oz and spinach 6 oz
2 carrot 7 oz celery 4 oz parsley 2 oz and spinach 3 oz
3 carrot 10 oz beet 3 oz and cuke 3 0z
4 carrot 11 oz beet 3 oz coconut 2 oz
also helpful for gout he says (the top four (1-4) are most important) are:
5 spinach juice
6 carrot 9 oz celery 5 oz and parsley 2 oz
7 carrot 12 oz and parsley 4 oz
these are the proportions for a single glass
the more glasses you do the better
a drink them within 15 minutes or the enzymes dissipate..do not store in refrig but make fresh each time
b..going somewhere like aldis you can get very cheap produce..even if it is not organic if the pulp (fiber) is not eaten no pesticides etc will be in the juice as they are only in the plant fibers and juicing crushes the fibers and releases the unpoisoned part.
c chew the juice

we see all heart’s suggestions there at the top of the list..celery seed extract..
(make this into a tincture as it will last many years as follows)
take celery seeds and add 80 proof vodka and have it half celery seeds and half vodka when it settle..shake several times a day in two weeks strain through a cheesecloth or cloth and put in a dark colored bottle ( tincture bottle with an eyedropper top would be best like this type http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view?back=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3Fp%3Dtincture%2Bbottle%26b%3D41%26ni%3D20%26ei%3DUTF-8%26pstart%3D1%26fr%3Dytff1-%26fr2%3Dtab-web&w=78&h=218&imgurl=www.hgpills.com%2Fmisc_images%2Fhodia_tincture.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hgpills.com%2Fdefault.cfm&size=5k&name=hodia+tincture+j…&p=tincture+bottle&oid=6587051cb6f5d654&fr2=tab-web&no=44&tt=332&b=41&ni=20&sigr=112m9lbgf&sigi=11elr406i&sigb=13hvne7jt ) or in a clear glass bottle in a paper bag (light deteriorates it) and label it then take 60 drops (2 dropperfuls) 3-5 times a day
They say there is a FAST remedy to take the pain away quicker. Does anyone know what it is?
Eat cherries they are one of nature’s natural gout medicines. Cherries are naturally known to lower the uric acid level in the body and can help with swelling of joints. Canned, fresh, cherry juice should all do the job. If you can’t get your hands on cherries try other berries like blueberries, raspberries or blackberries.
Also drink 8 to 10 glasses of water each day, water will help flush out the uric acid in your blood stream.
