I had a severe attack of Gout which affected both my knees and both ankles i could not walk for 4 days the swelling has since gone down but i am left with terrible pain in both ankle joints i cannot move without crutches and when i can it is not far please help. i am 50 years old.

This really is something you MUST discuss with your GP. Usual management is one of the older NSAIDs that also reduce uric acid levels such as Naproxen, this might need to be given with a PPI such as omeprazole as the NSAID dose required is often very high and you may need gastric protection.

If you are prone to frequent severe attacks then allopurinol might need to be started at the same time and then left on as a maintenance prophylactic to reduce the risk of further attacks.

Changes in diet are often suggested to avoid purines but seldom prevent definitively.

I know it sounds a bit silly but Gout is down to excess acid and having suffered in the past I was advised to take acidophilus every day to rebalance my gut and it worked, you need the good ones you keep in the fridge and it does take over a week to work but I took them for a month or so and have never had any recurrences nor any heartburn which I used to get regularly. You can get them in a health food shop and if you are in pain they are definately worth a try.

Gout is so painful, have you been to the doctors? There are prescribed tablets you can take. My husband has to take them every day, it is a build up of Uric acid crystals that form outside the joints. Years ago they said it was a rich mans disease, too much rich food, too much red meat. Have a look at your diet but you must go to the doc’s.

  • Gout is precipitation of monosodium urate crystals into tissue, usually in and around joints, most often causing recurrent acute or chronic arthritis. Acute arthritis is initially monarticular and often involves the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Symptoms include acute pain, tenderness, warmth, redness, and swelling. Diagnosis requires identification of crystals in synovial fluid. Treatment of acute attacks is with anti-inflammatory drugs. The frequency of attacks can be reduced by regular use of NSAIDs, colchicine, or both and by treating hyperuricemia with allopurinol or uricosuric drugs.

the first thing you have to do is see a doctor.
You could have Gout or Pseudo-gout. Ask your doctor for a uric acid blood test to see what the problem is. Also you need to use anti inflammatory drugs so you need a prescription.
For potential non medical help try one heaped teaspoon of Baking Soda to a large glass of water after a meal morning and night. Drink lots of water to flush your uric acid out of your body. If the baking soda doesnt work after a few days try organic apple cider with ‘MOTHER" this is the sediment at the bottom of unfiltered apple cider. Use 1 tablespoon of organic apple cider with a large glass of water with honey to sweeten.
best thing is see a doctor and get medicine. But ask what the side effects are as there are many dangers using NSAIDs and other gout drugs.

My husband also suffers from attacks of gout. I know how painful it can be. Sounds like you had a horrible attack of gout, the worst I’ve ever heard of.

You need to make an appointment with your doctor and get a prescription. I can’t remember the name of it but my husband takes it daily and so far it’s helping him.

If you aren’t one to seek out medical attention, you can get some relief from gout with over the counter medicines. You’ll need to take an anti-inflamitory Naproxem Sodium is best. You’ll need to take more that what the bottle suggests. The dosage is "The starting dose is 825 milligrams, followed by 275 milligrams every 8 hours, until symptoms subside". Talk to your pharmacists, he’ll confirm the dosage and it will be above what’s on the bottle.

Drink a lot of water, and I mean a lot, you need to flush the uric acid from your system. Avoid red meats, alcohol and shellfish.

Eat cherries and drink cherry juice like its going out of style.
